What is Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency?
"Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1) is a genetic condition that can cause damage to the lungs and/or the liver." (Alpha-1 Foundation, “What Is Alpha-1?”)
There are a few main genotypes: M (fully functioning), M (the wonky one), F, S, X (null), and Z (partial function). Everyone has two of these alleles. I (Bethany) and many of my family members have MZ. Most people have MM and are completely fine. Those who are XX or ZZ or a combination of these alleles have the most drastic symptoms of the disease.

Living MZ Focus
Living MZ aims to shed light on the challenges of living with our Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency genotype, while also providing valuable insights into coping with the condition. This website is maintained by Bethany Wire. Although I live with this condition, I am not a healthcare professional. Neither I nor any of the featured guests are providing medical advice unless their medical credentials are explicitly stated.
